Hi there TheLittles,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand the external devices connected to your Mac are getting hot after updating the macOS. I can understand how that would cause some concern and I’ll be happy to help with this.

First, I would disconnect all these devices and perform an SMC and NVRAM reset on your Mac. These resets can improve the performance and stability on your Mac and may have an impact on this issue. Please look at these links for the steps:

Boot into safe mode as well. This can help resolve and isolate issues that are related to your startup disk. Take a look at how to do this here:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Connect all your devices one by one and see if the issue returns with any of them. If so, you may want to see if there is a firmware update available for them. That may help resolve this issue as well.

Best wishes.

Thank you!

I performed it all on 10.14.4, after restoring to it. It all stopped getting hot and the fan stopped going fast.

So, I then updated to 10.14.5, and got all the issues once more. Having success with this, I performed it all on the 10.14.5 update installation. Now, everything is back to how it was, and should be, just like above.

Why does this occur? It seems to be a common phenomenon in recent updates. Is it an error in the firmware? I did not come across any more updates, once 10.14.5 was installed.
