Recently, I have began experiencing electric/static shocks from my Late 2011 MacBook Pro, more specifically, on the trackpad and hinge areas of the laptop. Are these shocks harmful, and do they indicate problems/faults with my MacBook?

If this does NOT correlate with using the power adapter, you may have a serious problem. This could either be an electrical problem (but this is unlikely because the battery supplies DC only) or you could be developing a repetitive strain injury or nerve damage in your fingers. This is a serious problem, not to be ignored.
If they seem to occur ONLY when using the power adapter, you may need to switch to using a 2 meter grounded cord instead of a "duck-head" short adapter. The 2 meter cord has a ground, the "duck head" does not:
note the metal showing in the slot, that mates with the chromed lug on the power adapter.
