forgot passcode, ipad mini is disabled

In an attempt to reset my mother in laws ipad I have somehow screwed up the passcode and now I cannot restore it from the backup. Please help.

You will have to erase the device - please see If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
