Viewing/Using HEIC photos in Safari

On macOS Mojave 10.14.5. When I drag photos into Safari to a blank tab, JPEG photos open and display, but HEIC photos open a Finder dialog box with the photo selected. Clicking on it opens the HEIC photo in Preview. Similarly, dragging a JPEG photo to Google doc inserts the photo as expected, but dragging an HEIC brings up an error message. It seems as if my installation Safari doesn't have HEIC support. Is there a way to add HEIC support to Safari?

I don't know about HEIC support with Safari, but if these photos are from your iPhone or iPad, then there are settings in iOS which will convert the HEIC photos to JPEG when transferring them to your computer. There is another iOS option which will store the photos on the iOS device in JPEG format instead of HEIC format. However, the latter option seems to reset to HEIC format after an iOS update. These iOS settings are a little hard to find and understand, but they do exist.
