Command + R vs Option key when rebooting?

I've always used the Option key when rebooting, to select another bootable drive. Lately I've been reading instructions for booting to the recovery partition by holding down Command + R at boot time. Is there a difference? When I boot holding Option, I am not seeing a recovery partition. Is that because I didn't use Command + R? Please explain.

Thanks

Yes they are two different things. command-r is a boot into Recovery Mode which will give you the options shown in this link:

While option-boot is a boot into Startup Manager which will allow you to choose a startup volume:

You will not see the Recovery volume in Startup Manager.

Yes there's a difference.

holding down the option key, just presents you with drives or volumes the device can boot from, no recovery option.

Command+R is one of the 3 key combinations you can use to start the Recovery console. Depending on the key combination used, will be the end result.
