How come I cannot send iMessage from my iWatch if my iPhone is not present?

I have never been able to send or receive iMessage from iWatch 4-LTE if my iPhone is not present? I actually got through to an Apple level 3 Tech and he said it would not work without my iPhone being within 30 feet. iMessage is turned on. And went through all the reset stuff with Apple Techs. Same login is being used. etc. Baffled.

Apple Watch Series 4, watchOS 5

If your watch has a working cellular connection there is no reason iMessage would require the phone to be nearby. Apple’s support document How to use your Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby - Apple Support describes what should work on standalone cellular - pretty much everything, but see the footnote about SMS etc.

I am guessing if you found L3 support that you have seen If you can’t send or receive messages on your Apple Watch - Apple Support but given the misinformation about needing the watch nearby I will post the link anyway.

Hey,

Thanks for showing what you've been through. Would it be alright with you if you updated this as you go along?

I don't live near any Apple Store or AASP and posted my iPhone to have the battery changed thinking, well I have an Apple Watch Series 4 with cellular, It'll be fine. Man, I learnt a lot after that.

Because the iPhone was gone, the Watch became disconnected from the iPhone. I could make and receive calls, but couldn't do any iMessage or Facetime (which I realised after I posted the phone, seems to be the majority of what I was using).

So, when your watch is on a cellular network but isn't connected to your iPhone nearby, I found that it's features are different. I've found this in this support articles as well: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205547

"If your watch is connected to a cellular network, but your iPhone isn't nearby, your watch can do the same things that it can when using Wi-Fi."

Below this the article list features it can do and it says send & receive messages.

Im totally lost. Im on the phone with Verizons Tech II now. We tried everything and the iWatch keeps saying I have to "turn on iMessage" when I try and send an iMessage from my iWatch. But it is on, has been signed out and back in and reset. Still nothing, which makes the Apple Tech III's words more substantial. Though its opposite of all iWatch literature.
