Can I recover data from a water damaged iPhone 6?

I recently went out on a trip and while on a boat taking a photo I managed to drop my iPhone 6 into the water!

I have went to a third party before when I had my iPhone 4 damaged from water as my daughter dropped it in the toilet and it wouldn't turn on. They recovered the information BUT I'm wondering if its possible on the iPhone 6 as I recently saw Apple say I should never go to third parties now as they don't use genuine parts and may make me pay for something that is not fixable and may actually cause more damage on the phone itself!

Should I just give up and lose hundreds of photos and my contacts and just buy a new iPhone or is there a way to recover the information? Any help is appreciated

Whether you want to see if a 3rd party can get your phone running to the point that you can get the data off or not is up to you.

As you already seem to be aware, they do not have legitimate access to Apple parts and having them do any work on your device will forfeit your rights to a discounted out of warranty replacement from Apple.

You're still going to want/need to buy a new phone as a water damaged device can not be permanently repaired. Corrosion has already begun and the only way to avoid further damage is to completely replace the device.

If the possibility of recovering your photos, etc. are worth the difference in price between an out of warranty replacement from Apple ($299) and the price of a new phone, and you're willing to risk losing both the discount on a replacement and your data, then go for it.

The iPhone 6 uses Apple Secure Enclave encryption system. Depending on the actual damage internally (what shorted our, what is corroded, etc), it is possible that a third party might be able to recover data, but it is also very unlikely they will be successful. So it would be your call as to how much money, time and effort you wish to invest to recover data.

If you want a less expensive replacement, then you cannot have any third party work on it, but can take it to Apple for an out of warrant replacement (less than a new phone to get a like new service unit replacement with 90 days warranty).
