Update through iTunes

When I want to update both my iPhone and iPad through iTunes, the program downloads the new iOS two times. I presume once downloaded, the data is stored in my PC so I should be able to update both devices with just one download. How is this possible? Thank you in advance for any help.

Each model of device has a separate firmware file. If you want to minimise the downloaded data install over the air updates to each device.
