Files have disappeared

Hello,

I've been having a problem with disappearing files. Several documents no longer anywhere I can find on my iMac or on the iCloud. A few of them were sent to co-workers via WeTransfer so I can get copies, but others have simply vanished. Any advice what might be happening or how to retrieve them?
