Question on RAM in new iPod touch 7th gen

I'm attempting to found out if the new 7th generation iPod touch has more memory than the 6th generation, or if it's the same 1GB. [This refers to RAM, not storage space.]

Although Apple's published tech specs for the 6th gen and the 7th gen models do not identify the RAM at all, I've referenced this spec on the 6th gen model from a Wikipedia article, which unfortunately does not have the RAM for the 7th gen. Since a couple of games I play have some issues with the low amount of RAM in the iPod, I'd like to find out if the new model has upped the RAM. I'm sure the faster CPU would help, but some processes just need more memory. Does anyone have a reference?

iPod, iOS 12

Yes, not all reviewer(s) knows how much RAMs are included, but I am pretty sure

9to5Mac and Appleinsider are correct.

RAM = 1.96GB

It does appear that this model may have 2GB of RAM and that it does specifically mention that it's a 7th generation model on the iPod itself, but it's been a battle, up to now, to get anywhere near confirmation.

For example:

... and I specifically asked about whether it states that it's 7th gen on the iPod. Apparently, we now discover that it does.

The original Apple Insider article, authored by Andrew O'Hara and cited by Wikipedia, also does not mention the amount of RAM. Mr O'Hara does mention it in his YouTube video, but once again, only now.

Everyone can think I'm being awkward if they like, but I'm not. I showing due diligence.

I'm 90% convinced.

We may have confirmation from the YouTube video published by 9to5Mac. At the 3:45 point, they hold up the iPod running an app called Geekbench 4, which displays various hardware specs of the unit, including memory (RAM) shown as 1.96GB:

I would not suspect them of photoshopping the image, so I think it's safe to say we have confirmation of a 1GB > 2GB RAM upgrade from 6th to 7th generation -- unless there are doubts about the accuracy of the Geekbench4 app.

So it looks like we have two hardware upgrades in the 7th generation iPod touch, CPU and RAM, along with one additional storage option (the 256GB). Everything else about the 7th gen, including the color choices, appears to be the same as the 6th gen. :o)

Nor would I assume photoshopping, but I did wonder if they have a pre-production model, as opposed to a real world release one that we might buy.

What I can definitely confirm though is that in iOS 12.3.1, under Settings/General/About, the model number now states which generation it is. This is a first as far as I know:

Well, I have an iPod touch (6th ge... - apparently. I haven't found a way to read all of that text.

No, the question is about the amount of RAM, not about storage capacity. I tried to make that clear; sorry if it was not.

Does anyone know if the new 7th gen model has more RAM than the 6th gen model, or if it has the same 1GB?

[This info is not included in the tech specs published by Apple, as mentioned in the original post.]

No.

The new iPod Touch 7th gen still has ONLY 1 GB of internal RAM.

Sorry.

The ONLY hardware bump it got was the CPU.

From an A8 to the A10 Fusion CPU found in the iPhone 7.

And new storage sizes. 32, 128 & 256, respectively and new colors.

That is it.

Every other spec of the new 7th gen iPod Touch is the exact same as the last iPod Touch and previous 2012 models.

Same older design.

Still only a Home button with NO Touch ID, too!

Still ONLY WiFi.

Same cameras as the last model.

Same crummy 1.2mp FaceTime camera that Apple just will NOT get rid of after 10 years of making iDevices.

This new iPod Touch is a “barely” spec upgrade only.

Of course, Wikipedia doesn't always get things right, so treat that with a degree of caution. Wikipedia's source for that claim does not mention the RAM at all. (One question from a member of the public asks if it is confirmed as 2GB, but that's the point, it isn't confirmed, or even specified.)

The same article suggests that the iPod's Settings screen gives the model as "iPod Touch (7th generation)". If so, that is the first time I've ever heard of the generation being specifically mentioned on the iPod itself.

Doesn’t help.

Some other long time Apple product reviewers are claiming still 1 GB of RAM.

Until there is an iFixit YouTube teardown video for this new iPod Touch 7th gen, everyone here are only guessing.

If I am not mistaken, this new iPod Touch is ARkit compatible ( the 6th gen iPod Touch is not ).

I think for ARKkt compatibility, you need both the faster CPU and minimum 2 GBs of RAM.

The Fiend, thank you very much for your due diligence. And thanks to everyone for this conversation.

I can confirm that my iPod touch 6th gen now indicates in Settings > General > About > Model Name that it is 6th generation. I don't know if it always did -- this may be due to the latest update to iOS 12 -- so the 7th gen most likely does as well.

If I can ever find a definitive answer to the amount of RAM in the 7th gen, I'll be sure to post back here.

Cheers.

It could be a pre-production release, or they bought it at an apple store. I know my local Best Buy still has it online only - ie they haven’t had time to get stock shipped to local stores.

So those in major metropolitan cities or near apple stores may have bought the newest iPod, others will likely have to wait a week or two. I plan to update mine but have to wait until my local Best Buy has one in stock (likely later this week considering it wasn’t even on best buy’s web site earlier this week)
