Windows 10 bootloop when USB-C adapters are plugged in

Hi everyone,

When a USB-C adapter is connected to my iMac from home or at work, Windows 10 does bootloop all the time and ends with bluescreens. I have to disconnect the adapters on my iMac for Windows 10 to start correctly.

I had tested with two different type of USB-C adapters from two different brands:

Each adapter works great and fine on Mac OS 10.13 and 10.14. But the bootloop occurs on the two different iMac even without a DVI cable or USB key plugged in the adapter.

Here are my setups:

  • iMac 27" 2017
  • AMD Readon Pro 580 8GB
  • Boot Camp 6.1.0
  • Windows 10 1809 64Bits up to date
  • Apple Software Update up to date

I looked for solutions on the web and the users always unplug the adapter before start Windows. There is a way to disable USB-C driver on Windows boot? Or something to do to fix that? Because it's annoying to disconnect the adapters every time.

Thanks for your answers!

Yes I know that the safe mode disables the GPU drivers by default. And yes that's a display connected to the other hand.

Well I think that I fixed the issue of the LMP USB-C to DVI adapter!

I have heard some time ago that we can download some unofficial AMD drivers for Boot Camp here: https://www.bootcampdrivers.com/

These guys are giving the possibility to update the AMD drivers without going through Apple Software Update for overclocking and update for games etc etc... I decided to give it a try.

Here is how I fixed the bootloop problem:

  1. Download the unofficial drivers for your iMac version here https://www.bootcampdrivers.com/
  2. Unzip the downloaded file
  3. Open the How-To PDF file
  4. Read and follow carefully the tutorial
  5. Reboot your Mac each time is asked in the tutorial
  6. Plug your adapter and reboot your Mac

The bootloop loop disapears and the secondary screen works!!!

I need to test with the same technique at my house for the Satechi USB Type-C Clamp Hub Pro!

I will keep in touch soon!

Thanks for your answer! Yeah I though too that it will be a temporary solution. Is there a way to disable some drivers loading at boot but enable them loading after login in the Windows account? I didn't found a solution online yet.

And I didn't get the chance to test with Apple USB-C adapters. But what I read online in some forums, the problem still occurs with the Apple USB-C adapters.

Thanks for your future answers!

Hi Loner T,

Sorry for the long reply.

I tested with the SMC and NVRAM reset with the two adapters but the bootloop still happens.

I noticed that, if I boot on the Mac partition first, log-in to my account, plug the adapter then reboot the Mac into my Boot Camp partition, the bootloop doesn't happen. It's random but sometimes it boots normally and other times not.

It seems to be a GPU driver issue with Windows. When I boot in safe mode, it's boots "normally".

Something linked to the AMD drivers given by the Boot Camp drivers probably? I continue testing...

I keep you in touch.
