Periodically, my iPhone 7+ will not sound an audible alert if connected to my series 2 Apple Watch. I do nothing to make this happen but if I turn Bluetooth off(which disconnects Apple Watch) the audible alert sounds. What causes this as it is a real pain. This only happens when iPhone is locked as well.

Your devices are working as designed. Here's how notifications work when you have an iPhone and a Watch. If the phone is unlocked, notifications are heard on the phone. If the phone is locked and the Watch is unlocked, the notifications will be heard no the Watch. If both devices are locked, the notifications will be heard on the iPhone. And, as you've discovered if you disconnect the Watch from the iPhone by turning of BT, the Watch won't get the notifications.

It's not the usual way things are. The iPhone/Watch combination has always worked that way.
The only workaround is for you to disable Wrist Detection in the Watch app on your phone. The drawback to that is that you'll have to enter a passcode to do anything other than look at the screen of your watch and you won't be able to use Apple Pay from your watch.
Have you accidentally engaged the mute switch? It's the slider above the volume buttons? Do you have Do Not Disturb enabled?
So both devices are locked and no audible notification on iPhone. It has worked in the past. I have tried many settings but it comes and goes on it’s own!
The answer is no to both questions.
One other thing ... the iPhone rings on incoming calls but that is the only audible”alert.”
Just to be clear "locked" on the Watch means that, in order to access anything other than the main screen, you need to enter the passcode. It doesn't just mean the screen is dark.
Didn’t know that. Working as advertised then. Is there anyway to make iPhone audible alerts with watch unlocked? That is the usual way things are.
