Face ID not scanning when device is first opened

When I turn my iPhone XR on it doesn’t immediately attempt to unlock using Face ID. I have to swipe up to get Face ID to activate which means I can’t see notification previews if I have it set to ‘when unlocked’.

Any suggestions? It’s a brand new iPhone.

What does "turn my iPhone XR on" mean exactly? Did you have it powered off, for example, and then power it on, resulting in seeing the Apple logo for 10 or 15 seconds?

In the above case, Face ID will not work at all right after turning on the iPhone. You will have to enter the iPhone's passcode for added security.
