I have a 6S...lately, I've received phone calls while the phone is in Airplane mode. How is that possible?
I do have Wi-fi calling on, but shouldn't the Airplane mode take precedence? Should I take off Wi-fi calling when I need silence? Seems like a pain to keep taking off wi-fi calling since I need it to get service in my home.

No. This is how Wi-Fi Calling is supposed to work. If you want silence, enable a Do Not Disturb Mode with "Silence" set to always, so you won't receive calls even without Airplane Mode.

If you turn WiFi on after enabling airplane mode, then WiFi calling will still work. That's how it's supposed to work.
If you don't want to get calls at all, try using Do Not Disturb.
