1st gen Apple Pencil not connecting to Ipad Air 3

Hi all,

I just got an Ipad Air 3. I also have an Apple Pencil (1st Gen) that I used with a Pro, so I know it worked in the past. The Pen has been idle for several months and I just tried to connect it to the Ipad Air 3. The image below shows the error message I received. The pen is now showing that it is 'connected' with the Ipad but I get the message below repeatedly. Are there any suggestions other than buying a new 1st gen pen? Thanks so much!

If it's been sitting idle, the battery may have drained to the point where it can't hold a charge anymore. Leave it plugged in to the iPad for an hour or so and try again.

If that doesn't help, plan to replace it.

The teeny tiny li-ion battery in the Apple Pencil cannot be discharged for extended periods of time. And by your own admission, your pencil was not charged for months, so the battery has died and can't be restored or replaced. If you are within the one year warranty provided for accessories, take it to Apple with a copy of your receipt and they'll likely replace it for you. If you are outside the one year warranty, you'll need to purchase a new pencil. Only this time never let the battery deplete.
