That keyboard has a built-in flat lithium-ion rechargeable battery similar an iPhone, so it should have a pretty good shelf life. Plus like Allen say's, that keyboard is a sealed unit and opening it to removing the battery would surly destroy it. see > https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Magic+Keyboard+Teardown/50995

From limited product information available, these appear to utilize power from the iPad

and (if so) have no internal battery. ~ These use magnetic 'smart connectors' to attach it.

This product has limited one-year warranty; but may qualify for more if bought with iPad

and covered by AppleCare+ plan. ~ You'd need to ask product specialist at an Apple store.

"is there an option to remove the batteries?"

Not sure. I've only had mine a few months and use it every day. Also am traveling so can't look at mine for about 10 days!

Can't find any takeapart links but I did not have time for a thorough search. Try using the strings "magic keyboard takeapart" and 'magic keyboard remove battery" to see if you have better luck.

Based on past Mac keyboards with a similar form factor, my first thought is no. Most of the previous aluminum boards could only be opened by destroying them. If no one else has a better answer, it's probably time to ask at an Apple store or call on their support lines.
