It’s entirely possible it suffered water damage as no iPhone is waterproof, and water resistance is not a guarantee against water damage. Any time an iPhone is exposed to water, there is a chance it will suffer water damage, and usually that is catastrophic damage that requires the device be replaced. All the IP67 rating does is reduce the chance that will happen, but it does not eliminate it. That is why water damage is not covered and voids your warranty.
