unable to update iPhone

Unable to update software on iPhone 5s and 7. Getting the same message " unable to check for update" on both. Good wifi and mobile signal. Please advise. Everything on both phones is slow and can't get any webpages to open - server stopped responding message appears. Yet I am on my Mac and internet connection is working fine. And I am getting text messages and calls on the phones.
