what are "derivatives" regarding iPhoto

What are "derivatives" regarding iPhoto? I am in the process of moving items out of iCloud storage and ran across the term "derivations" when displaying where a file was located. Derivatives is part of "proxies" which is part of "resources", is part of Photos library on my late 2013 iMac, macOS Mojave version 10.14.5, Photos Version 4.0 (3451.7.120). Any definitions for this senior neophyte? Thank you.

In the "Derivatives" folder are all kind of working copies created by Photos to speed up browsing. I am seeing there previews of the edited versions, previews of the edited versions, thumbnails for browsing, and also quasi master files returned by photo editing extensions.

If you want to move your iCloud Photos to a new destination, it would be easier to use "File > Export > Export unmodified Original" to save your high resolution photos in a folder outside the library, and "File > Export > export ... photos" to save the edited versions as well.
