traffic on port 8801 and 8999

Hello everyone,

I am a compsci student and currently investigating passive internet traces from 2018 of a monitor located in New York. There I am noticing a huge amount of UDP and TCP traffic on port 8999, and also a lot of UDP traffic on port 8801. After doing some research I found these sites:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201999

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202944

It says, that "Web service, Internet Radio streams" use TCP/UDP port range 8000-8999, but nothing specifically about port 8801 or 8999.

http://de.adminsub.net/tcp-udp-port-finder/8999

Also this site says that it is perhaps the quicktime streaming server.

I captured traffic on a Macbook while using iTunes Radio, Quicktime Broadcaster and the AppStore. None of these services was using port 8999 or port 8801.

Does anyone here know if any Apple service is frequently using either of these ports? Else it might also be an entirely different service. I am posting this here since I don't know where else it would belong.

Sincerely,

Luca

Don’t think it’s Apple.

If I recall correctly 8999 is popular for torrenting, but I’m far from an expert.
