You can walk in, but walk ins get lowest priority for service, behind all the people who made appointments. At busy Apple Stores, that means a walk in may wait all day and still not get service. So it always to your advantage to make the appointment so you know you’ll get service when you go in.

I know at my two local stores, odds of getting serviced on any given day when walking in without an appointment is next to zero. They are always very busy.
