Camera exposure

Is there a way to recalibrate or adjust the “auto” exposure on iPhone 5s? All photos are too dark. I can manually adjust the exposure/brightness. But have to adjust it every single time I take a picture... Makes no difference if HDR is on or off. Video is a problem because I can turn the brightness up, but as soon as camera is moved it’s too dark again. It’s like the sensor is not calibrated correctly so photos/videos are always too dark or dull unless I manually adjust.

when you go to settings>camera>do you have "preserve settings" set?
