Has anyone else experienced this?
Any idea how to stop it from happening? If I quit the mail app completely it does not happen. Only when its running in the background.

You are definitely onto something. I removed my gmail accounts and it doesn't do this anymore...
I have heard Google does that. I don’t use it so I’m unable to confirm those reports, but what I can tell you is that Mail isn’t doing that on any of my Macs.

I have three Gmail accounts and I can't reproduce the problem at all. I checked three of my Macs. So I don't know what the issue might be unless it's people using G Suite accounts. Beats me.
Whose email service provider(s) are you using?
I have iCloud, 2x gmail, outlook
Interesting. I did only add my gmail accounts recently.
ill try removing them and see if it continues.
I do have gmail and iCloud, but I've had them for a long time, but my problem is only recent.
Ever since 10.14.5 mail app has been opening on its own (usually about half an hour or so after receiving new mail).
