Updates provide security fixes and patches, enhancements and improve functionality.


You are not required to update if you don't want to. You can ignore the update prompts when they come up. But its generally recommended you do update.


Also updates on an iPhone are extremely simple and generally quite quick. You can even set them up to happen automatically at night when your iPhone is connected to power, and wifi.
