no wave patterns in mixing channel strip

hi there. I am really new to producing and Logic Pro x. I have started a new project and recorded a few instruments, when I to open the EQ on the channel strip for a track there are no wave patterns. I am playing the track and the sound is coming through, but there are no wave patterns.

when I open previous projects everything is fine, but it is just new projects. Hopefully I am being stupid and I have just pressed something wrong.
