If it had a subscription you should stop its auto-renewal if you no longer want it (obviously not using an app, or just deleting it, won't stop a subscription) : View, change, or cancel your subscriptions - Apple Support
In terms of a refund purchases are considered final as you know, but you could try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund you as a one-off (you know that you are only talking to fellow users on these user forums, so nobody on here can refund anything) : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
