No, you cannot disable that feature. The side buttons are an alternative to tapping the white virtual shutter for taking photos. They are the physical shutter buttons in the phone.

Looking at the front of the phone, they are the two buttons on the left side, just below the 'silence' switch. When the Camera app is active each of these buttons will (when pressed) activate the shutter, and if pressure is maintained, a burst results.
I have a neurological deficit in my hand and my grip is more secure if I hold the phone in the middle while using landscape . It would be nice to not take dozens of pictures when I only want one. it won't be there in the world if it cannot be turned off but it would be a bit more convenient.
Do you mean the lock sound?
Head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, scroll down, toggle "Lock Sound" off.
It depends on where the device was purchased.
Some countries, like Japan, demand the the shutter sound can't be removed or muted.
I turned the Lock Sound off but no difference.
It was purchased here in the U.S.
