Is there no way to see what chapter you're reading?

Hi all.

I'm going through a programming book on my iPad; it comes with example code for each chapter. But Books, as far as I can tell, doesn't show you what chapter you're in. Example below. What chapter am I in? The footer says "12 pages left in this chapter." That seems dumb; it could say "12 pages left in chapter 7" or whatever.

iPad, iOS 12

My first answer evidently didn't go through.

On the page you have loaded for this question there is a back arrow at the top, far left. To the right of that are 3 lines each having a dot then a line (I don't know what you call them ) Anyway, tap on that symbol, it opens to the information about what you are reading. The column on the right shows the page each chapter starts on. Find the line where your page would be located, look to the left on the same line. That is your chapter.

Sorry if my answer appeared that it might be sarcastic, that was not my intention. It was just how I learned to check when I couldn't remember where I was, other than just by the page numbers at the bottom. When I do check, at least on my iPad, the chapters already read along with the current one are all shown in bold, the unread ones aren't.

I don't know what "UI " means, please advise. I'm just an old self taught computer novice who likes to learn new methods of using my computer and iPad.

I'm assuming that you're not being sarcastic here, so I thank your for your reply.

But that is a ridiculous UI failure, and you've confirmed that the answer to the question essentially "no."

Apple's initial failure is to not show the chapter on the page you're viewing. Its second failure is to not highlight the chapter when you go to the table of contents.

Ha ha, no problem. I could tell you were being sincere, thanks.

And hey, sometimes "novices" notice things in non-standard UIs (user interfaces) that more-experienced people don't... because we're looking for them where they're "supposed" to be and they're not there.

But in this case it seems that the information is just not being presented. I'm also using an iPad, but I don't see this bold/non-bold display in the table of contents. The only thing bold in my table of contents is section headings. And this wouldn't really provide a workaround anyway, since you've noted that numerous things are bold.
