Difficulty signing into my new MacBook pro

Every time I try signing into my new MacBook Pro, I get this message “ there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server”. My last MacBook Pro was stolen and I have put a lock on it, could this be the problem?? In the meantime, I used the same ID and password to get access here
