Most insurance companies will not cover portable electronic devices unless you get a personal articles policy. Mine won't sell one of those for iPads or iPhones but it won't hurt to check.
Apple started last year selling an add-on policy through AppleCare + for iPhone theft and loss coverage, it is through a 3rd party firm.
