It could heat up easily when exposed to direct sunlight and used as GPS.

Firstly have you done anything different two days ago, updated the iOS, installed an App or put the device in a new case?

For the first two you could try restarting the device, or a Force Restart to see if it will clear the “process” that may be running the device a little harder than usual.

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

If the latter, simply remove the case and see how things go.

If it’s non of the above another general fix could be to try “Reset All Settings” from Settings>General>Reset, it doesn’t remove content or data put puts the setting side of things back to default.

You could also try looking at Settings>Battery to see if any processes/apps stand out with regards to excessive use, especially when the device is in screen off mode.

If nothing jumps out at you another option is to Restore the device, preferably via a computer using iTunes but similar can be achieved from the devices Settings.

If that fails then you need to book a Genius appointment and go in to your nearest Apple Store to get the hardware checked out.

Hope some of this helps.
