Hi keywestgal74,

As to my knowledge, when you upgrade your iCloud storage option you'll need some soft of payment method besides your iTunes store credit. Since iCloud Storage is a monthly subscription service you are required to add a credit card or another payment method.

Your iTunes store credit will be used as a first method to pay for your storage upgrade. After your iTunes credit has ran out your added payment method (such as credit or bank card) will be used to pay for iCloud.

I hope the information I provided can help you.

Michael
