update from Sierra to Mojave

Do I have to remove OS Sierra when I want to install Mojave? Because all the time I receive an announcement that the installation of Mojave is not possible...

I think there is not enough space... so now I have to make an effort to remove a lot of things tot trash or external disk (but what to choose...)
