Certain folders not showing in Finder

I am trying to reorganise my filesystem and have noticed that certain folders are not showing when viewed using Finder.

When viewed in the terminal the directory 'Users/hodgson/' contains the folders: Applications, Developer, Downloads, Pictures, Desktop, Documents, Library, and Public. However when viewed in Finder, the same directory only contains: Applications, Developer, Downloads, Pictures, and Public.

What is the reason for this difference? How can I make the missing directories viewable from Finder?

By default, Apple hides the user Library folder in Finder. Open a new Finder window, and press ⌘-J (view options). On that panel, check Show library folder. The actual Desktop view is your Desktop folder in Finder.
