I iMac crashed and I can't recover it?

Late 2012 recent mohave upgrade. Crashed so that it took up to 1 minute to respond to any click. Called Apple support spent an hour on the phone:

Safemode: won't happen, just shuts back off

Local recover boot: reinstall OS Doesn't work says "macOS could not be installed on your computer An error occurred while removing the previous system...try again"

Internet recovery boot: reinstall OS same as above.

I just want to clear and reinstall OS...I have my data backed up.

What should I do next?

Should I "delete" the HD from disk utility?

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.13

Try restarting in the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) and open Disk Utility. Run First Aid 2-3 times, if errors appear your HD has crashed and must be replaced. If you cannot boot into the Recovery Partition then the HD crashed hard.

At any rate I suspect the HD has died and you have to take it to your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be serviced.

I can and did do both boot local and online recovery as explained. No issues with first aid.

In disk utility i have have the option to erase the disk. Is this the next logical choice? Then try recovery reinstall?

I just want some reassurance before I erase.

btw this was a recall disc that was replaced by Apple a couple years ago.
