Sync contacts on iPhone & Mac

I was following the support/help directions to sync my contacts using iTunes. However, iTunes said that my contacts & calendar are synced by air. So is are these directions out of date? Also, my contacts are not synced so how do I know it's happening by air?

Thanks!

Is your Mac using iCloud as the default? When you go to settings>contacts>default account - what is listed there? What you are going to have to do is a very involved multistep process. To keep from confusing myself I am just going to list them numerically.

On the iPhone

  1. Go to settings>Apple ID (your name at the top)>iCloud>contacts turn this off (choose to keep contacts on the device)
  2. Go to settings>contacts>default account - set this to iCloud.
  3. Go back to settings>Apple ID>iCloud>contacts- turn this on and merge contacts.

On the Mac

  1. Open System Preferences and go to Internet accounts
  2. On each account that is not iCloud deselect contacts.
  3. Sign out of iCloud/Apple ID on your Mac.
  4. Restart Mac and sign back into Apple ID
  5. Open Contacts and see how many are there - they should match now.
