Why can't I get the Criterion Channel on my Apple TV 3rd generation?

The Criterion Channel is an app, an only available on Apple TV HD and 4K models.
The 3rd gen only has preset content sent via server, and providers have slowly been stopping support to concentrate on the apps for the current models.
