Steps to take:

Make sure he got a valid e-mail address that is not used in an Apple environment.
Create a new Apple ID using that e-mail address here: https://appleid.apple.com
Setup the new iPhone using his new Apple ID, follow the steps here: Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
