They say to connect a USB cable from your Ipad to your desktop are they talking male to male usb connection.
USB-A to Lightning is the cable for iPads newer then iPad 2.

When you say "other" devices, what are you trying to sync to? To sync from iTunes on your computer, you use the cable which came with your iPad. Give a bit more information for a better answer.
Disconnect the 'hub' that plugs directly into the wall from the cable, then plug the cable (usb) directly to a port on your computer.
