Optimized Media. How to stop after Import?

How do I stop my video from optimizing after importing?

I deselect “Create optimized media” when I import. The file sizes that are created by optimized media are ridiculously large and I don’t see the point.

For example, today I imported a 1080 60p video that is about 34:35. My FCPX Library was 10.55 GB.

All that I did was to add an Upper Title as a watermark that was superimposed for the entire length of the video.

FCPX 10.4.6 on my MacBook Pro using macOS Mojave 10.14.5 automatically started to process/render and the same Library with the same video is now 80.83 GB.

So I went from 10.55 GB to 80.83 GB by merely adding a font.

Is it possible to prevent this? It slows me down considerably, and going to Compressor takes much longer.

My video is going to YouTube.

Thank you.

Switch off background rendering in Playback. preferences. Select the library and use the delete generated library files.

Thank you.

Does optimizing either on import or later in the background affect quality?

I’m going to compress videos before uploading to YouTube. Will the quality be the same if I do not optimize before using Compressor?

Thank you. I cannot find a definitive answer.

Optimizing may effect the quality if you're doing complex effects or grading. Rendering will only effect the export speed, mostly depending on what you export to. If you export to ProRes, the background rendered files will create masters very quickly.

The quality will be the same.
