tar.bz2 file

I haven't had to unzip a file on a mac in a while, so I have forgotten how.
I want to install filezilla on my mac, and I've downloaded a tar.bz2 file from their site.

I tried using Stuff it, and also the default unzipping program on the mac.
But I have not been able to open the file.
Can someone please tell me how in the world do you unzip a tar.bz2 file, specifically filezilla, on a Mac. I have googled it but come across different points of view, I figure I have a better chance of getting the right answer on this forum.

thank you in advance.

well, no, i'm not sure. I was able unzip it using the default Archive Utility application. And it did extract the files and the Filezilla application on my desktop. However, when I double click to open, I get these errors:

So I don't know what's going on.
Any ideas?
Like I said, I haven't worked with zipped files on the mac for a long time.

thanks for the help.

In mac there is a simple way of doing that. You don't have to do anything except double clicking that file. It'll automatically unzip your file irrespective of the extension.

Another way of doing it is from the terminal.

  • Go to your root folder where your file (.tar.bz2) is stored by using command "cd <folderName>"
  • Now when you reach to the destination folder just call this command - gunzip -c <filename.tar.bz2> | tat xopf -

You are all set to go.
