Netflix won’t play while iPhone is locked?

I listen to Netflix everyday at work, I prefer it to music. I had no problems locking my iPhone 6s and still being able to access other apps and what not all while Netflix still played. That is no longer the case. Now if I exit out of Netflix by pushing the home button I can’t swipe my screen down and just press play. Also my sound square on the control panel just has music displayed on it whereas before it would say Netflix and then whatever FRIENDS episode I was watching. Please tell me how I can just listen to Netflix and still access the rest of my phone again!

I just tested this on my iPhone and it still works. However, on the control panel it says Music rather than the show you are watching through Netflix. Once I exited the app I just pressed Play where it shows music and it started playing the Netflix audio. I tested completely locking the device as well as using other apps. Try force closing the Netflix app and restarting your iPhone.

Hi Westinsmom530,

This was definitively a functionality that was present and was removed. I was doing this on regular basis but about 2-3 months ago I'm not longer able to do it. I believe that Netflix has removed this functionality in some update. The control center "Now Playing" widget also no longer reflects what you are viewing on Netflix. Also gone is the ability to stream via Airplay. Probably both are related.

I'm starting to see a trend with third party app developers and Apple, they retaliate via removing functionality every time Apple does something to disturb them (I'm still waiting for a proper Spotify app on the ATV)

I've been very annoyed by this as well. There are a few Netflix shows that I like to listen to while falling asleep, and the ability to play audio only while the phone was locked allowed me to do so. The phone has to lie on its back to charge wirelessly, and the screen can't be on at night or it's sleep-disturbing. I'm not sure why this would have been eliminated, but it definitely was. And it stinks.
