The free LibreOffice (Writer) v6.2.4 can open MacWrite documents. This MS Office replacement suite installs entirely into your Applications folder. A one-time ritual is to right-click on the installed LibreOffice icon, and choose Open. The operating system will then run the Gatekeeper tool(s) on LibreOffice to validate it. You will then be shown another dialog with an Open button. click that to open LibreOffice.

At this point, you can try right-clicking on the MacWrite document(s), and see if LibreOffice is on the Open With list of applications. If not, you can open LibreOffice and attempt to open the file from the Open panel. If it works, you can save the MacWrite document in .docx (Office 2007 - 2019) format.

If you plan to open many MacWrite documents, you can right-click on any MacWrite file and press command+i to Get Info on it. In that panel's Open With section, set it to LibreOffice and click through the Change All… button.
