eGPU
I have seen articles relating an eGPU to a Mac laptop. I would assume that the same benefits can be had if connected to my IMAC Desktop?

Without knowing what iMac you have your assumption cannot be assumed. Please read https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208544 to read what Apple has to say about EGPUs and their use with iMacs. Unless you have a Thunderbolt 3 equipped iMac (2017 or later) then you cannot use one. It is that simple.
