I ask because my Mackie Control no longer seems to work (****). I want the functionality back, but I don't want to sink precious $$ into something that's not a good solution. Recommendations are also welcome (on a budget here).

Did it just stop working with the Logic Update? If so wait until the next release is out. !0.4.5 is incredibly buggy and there are a lot of control surface problems. I'm sure a fix update is a top priority.
What happened to the Mackie... don't judge the Mackie with Logic 10.4.5 which itself seems broken. Probably the most error prone update to Logic Apple has ever released.
