On an iPhone X, the IMEI number can also be found in the side of the sim card tray.

There might be a problem with the modem.
Schedule an appointment at a Genius Bar or the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider.
That's not possible. The IMEI number is hard coded into the phone, it cannot be removed or lost.
You can verify this in Settings->General->About->IMEI/MEID
