why does my messages icon show 1 message but I have no new messages.

Hello,
This can be quite frustrating. Verify you are running the latest version of the system software by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update. Also have you tried turning your iPad off and on again? You can go about this by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until you see “Slide to power off...” appears.
