iMessage not working

Only My emails on my iPad appear in “start new conversations from” and “receive to and reply from” boxes. I am unable to change to my phone number. There is no icon I can tap.

OK........see the section in link on Continuity Service about Text Messages to make sure you have both your iPad and iPhone set up properly: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
