I think that you have to change it first using your email provider’s web site (on the server using a computer or in the settings of the mail provider iOS app) and then you can update the password in the settings on your device. In other words, if you have gmail for instance, you have to change it on a computer or you have to change it in their own app in the settings.


This is just an example of what I am describing.

Changing the password cant be done in the settings app on the iOS device. You can update the password in the settings to the new password after you change it.

You would only need to change it on the computer if you are trying to make a change to the password, versus updating the password on the phone. I was using update on the phone as meaning that you have a new password already on the account and you are trying to update the settings on the phone. If you are trying to update the settings on the phone, go where I said, then select the account, tap on the account again, and you will see the area to update passwords. The incoming server is on the first page, then you have to tap on the outgoing server (SMTP) to get to change it.
