Video/Movie compatibility after Mojave

I just got a warning that movies wont play in iMovie once Mojave is replaced - due to the 64 bit issue. I don't routinely use iMovie so none of my videos are stored there on my iMac. They are stored in the Photos app and that is where I play them. Will those movies continue to play in the Photos app when the new MacOS replaces Mojave?

Hi, Lynn,

Here's a link that provides definitive information regarding the legacy media issue:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209029

Some movies created with 32 bit apps with certain specified formats will not be playable after the upgrade from Mojave. The above link lists the formats, and these will need to be converted to a supported format before they can be played. I just wanted to make sure that I have provided you with accurate information. So, it is possible that some of your movies with defined legacy clips will not be playable, contrary to what I may have implied in my earlier post.

When you select the Codec32BitTool_sb and the QTImportHelperTool_sb, you can see the paths to this frameworks. Right inside the iMovie.app package. I take it, these two items will be removed from iMovie on Catalina and are the reason that certain video codecs will no longer be supported on Catalina. Look at the path in this screenshot. Codec32BitTool is part of the CompressorKitBundle (/Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Contents/Frameworks/AECore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Codec32BitTool_s)

and QT IMportHelperTool a part of the Flexoframe.work (/Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/Frameworks/Flexo.framework/Versions/A/Resources/QTImportHelperTool_sb)

I'm fully up to date with 64 bit iMovie as well as the Photo app. I've got Mojave on a 2017 iMac. I have videos that I've made and saved over the years dating back to my old Cosmos cell phone as well as made with Canon camera and iPhone 6 and 8. I keep my videos in the Photos app and they play fine right now. I dont really use iMovie for anything, but in early July I got a warning that Catalina won't play movies made creating formats or codecs that rely on Quicktime 7, which the Apple support site says "is included in macOS Mojave for compatibility purposes. However because versions of macOS after macOS Mojave will not longer include the QuickTime 7 framework, you'll first need to detect and convert incompatible media files to continue to use those files in iMovie." The Apple support site also said if users don't convert the files before uploading Catalina "the option to convert the incompatible files will no longer be available." Im not sure how much of a hassle it will be to go back and detect and convert all those old video amongst my 28,000 photos. And I'm wondering if this is only an iMovie issue or if it would effect videos that are stored and played in Photos.

Hmmmm. You bring up an interesting point, Keith.

When I go to About This Mac>Overview>System Report>Software>Applications>iMovie it lists all iMovie 10 versions as 64 bit.

But when I follow the same file path and click on Legacy Software instead of Applications, it seems to show iMovie 10 as 32 bit.

I know that iMovie is 64 bit. Yet it's being shown as 32 bit legacy software in the Legacy Software display, and 64 bit in the Applications display. I wonder if that discrepancy is triggering the legacy warning.

Do you read it the same way?
